The World Cup is quickly approaching and one bet I particularly like the look of is Spain to win the world cup and Messi to be top goalscorer. This is available at odds of 66/1 with various bookmakers.
Spain are the current World Cup holders after winning the trophy in 2010 and are European Champions after winning the Euro’s in 2012 and 2008. They have one of if not the best squad coming into the World Cup especially after the recent addition of Diego Costa. Their style of play will certainly suit the conditions in Brazil, it is going to be very hot and humid. The World Champions like the keep the ball and make their opponents chase it which will inevitably tire their opponents.
Brazil are the favourites to win their 6th world cup and hold the home advantage however many of the Spanish squad have experienced success recently and that includes the Spanish manager Vicente del Bosque who has been in charge of Spain since 2008.
Now onto the top goalscorer half of this double. Lionel Messi is my selection, do I need to say much more?
One important factor when selecting a top goalscorer is how far will that player’s team get in the tournament? Obviously the further Argentina progress, the more games Messi will play meaning he will have more opportunities to score. Argentina are second favourites to win the tournament behind Brazil. They are a best price of 3.5 to reach the final therefore playing the maximum amount of games if they do happen to reach the final. Odds of 3.5 suggest that Argentina have around a 28% chance of playing the maximum amount of games. Argentina are a best price of 2.1 to reach the semi-final therefore playing the maximum amount of games due to them playing in the third place play off. These odds suggest there is a realistic chance of Argentina reaching at least the semi-final meaning Messi will play the maximum amount of games.
A second important factor when choosing a top goalscorer is who will they face in their group. Each team will play 3 group matches therefore they have a great opportunity to score some goals early on in the competition. Argentina are in Group F which includes Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. This is one of the easier groups in my opinion which will lead to many goalscoring chances for Messi.
Messi has scored 36 goals in 36 games for Barcelona this season and from 2009 to Present he has scored 239 goals in 218 games showing he is consistently scoring goals for Barcelona. Whilst Messi’s record for Argentina is not quite as good as it is for Barcelona it is still impressive. He has 37 goals in 83 matches for Argentina. The winner of the Golden Boot usually scores 5-6 goals. Messi is certainly capable of that. In 2013 Messi played 7 games for Argentina scoring 6 goals. In 2012 Messi played 9 games and scored 12 goals for Argentina. These recent records show that he has what it takes to win the Golden Boot award.
