    USPGA Championship Preview

The final major championship of the year gets underway on Thursday, the USPGA Championship. Obviously, the field is full of world class players and the world number two, Jordan Spieth is the bookies favourite. The much talked about, Tiger Woods is also competing and some expect him to contend this week after an improved performance in the Quicken Loans National. Finally, the world number one, Rory McIlroy is competing after being out of action for over a month due to an ankle injury.
    Past Winners & Winnings Scores
    2014 – Rory McIlroy -16
    2013 – Jason Dufner -10
    2012 – Rory McIlroy -13
    2011 – Keegan Bradley -8
    2010 – Martin Kaymer -11

    The Course – Whistling Straits
    Par 72
    Course Yardage: 7,790
Designed by Pete and Alice Dye and established in 1998, Whistling Straits hosts its third PGA Championship this week. In 2004, Vijay Singh shot 8 under par to win his third major championship and in 2010 Martin Kaymer won his first major championship at this iconic venue, beating Bubba Watson in a play-off. The course is a par 72 that plays a very lengthy 7,790 yards, this indicating that driving distance is a huge advantage. It should also be noted that as a par 72, Whistling Straits has four par 5’s, therefore par 5 performance is absolutely crucial this week. In 2010, eventual winner Martin Kaymer played the par 5’s in 6 under par, which is pretty significant considering -11 won the event.

    My Selections
Justin Rose – I’m surprised Justin Rose is so far back in the betting. Behind Jordan Spieth, I’d had Justin Rose as the second favourite and I’m delighted to back him at 18/1. The Englishman is an 18 time winner and this includes a major championship. Rose comes into this event in excellent form, he finished 6th in the British Open, 4th in the Quicken Loans National and 3rd in last week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational. He’s clearly playing some excellent golf and it’d be no surprise to see him in contention this week.

Bubba Watson – Like Justin Rose, Bubba Watson has won numerous events, this includes two green jackets, and therefore he’s more than capable of winning on the big stage. He’s already won once this year and finished 2nd in the Canadian Open two starts ago. Last week at Firestone Country Club, Bubba finished in 2nd position, this indicating that he’s playing some excellent golf which is obviously important ahead of a major championship. Finally, in 2010, Watson lost in a playoff against Martin Kaymer around Whistling Straits, therefore it is a golf course which he can almost certainly win around.

Shane Lowry – My final selection for this week’s major is Shane Lowry who can be backed at a generous price of 66/1. Whistling Straits has a linksy feel to it and this should suit the Irishman who loves links golf. Lowry’s had a good season, thus far, he’s recorded a few top 10’s including a 9th place finish in the US Open a few months ago. Last week, Shane recorded his first victory in America in an extremely strong field, this suggesting that his game’s in superb shape.
