The Greenbrier Classic Betting Preview – 2nd July

One of my favourite events of the year (from a betting perspective), the Greenbrier Classic gets underway on Thursday the 2nd of July. The lesser players on the PGA Tour have generally performed well in this event which is why I like it so much and there’s always a good chance of an outsider lifting the trophy on Sunday evening. Bubba Watson heads the betting and is closely followed by Paul Casey, whilst the former world number one, Tigers Woods can be backed at 66/1.

    Past Winners and Winning Scores
    2014 – Angel Cabrera -16
    2013 – Jonas Blixt -13
    2012 – Ted Potter, JR -16
    2011 – Scott Stallings -10
    2010 – Stuart Appleby -22

The Course – The Old White TPC
    Par 70
    Course Yardage 7,287
The Old White TPC, hosts the Greenbrier Classic as it has done since the inception of this event on the PGA Tour schedule. It is a par 70 that has been lengthened over time to approximately 7,300 yards and neither the long nor short hitters have the advantage around this track, in my opinion. Being a par 70, it has more par fours than the average PGA Tour golf course, therefore par four performance is crucial. Finally, as you can see above, the winning score is generally pretty low, consequently, birdies are imperative this week and the birdie average statistic is one I’ve taken into account.

    My Selections

Kevin Kisner – In recent months, Kevin Kisner has proved to be one of the best players on the PGA Tour and after a fine run of form he’s now 14th in the Fedex Cup Standings. Kisner has finished inside the top ten in four of his last seven starts and the young American finished 12th in the US Open just two weeks ago. Admittedly, Kevin hasn’t played well in this event, however he is a much better player today, than he was a couple of years ago, and we are getting a tasty price due to his poor record at this venue. The course should suit his game, he’s ranked inside the top 30 in par four performance, which is crucial this week.

Daniel Berger – Daniel Berger is another young American who has impressed this year, it is his first year on the PGA Tour and he’s put in some excellent performances. He has finished inside the top 25, ten times in just 22 starts and that includes a second place finish in the Honda Classic earlier this year. Berger has not played in this event before but he has the game to perform well around the Old White TPC in my opinion. He’s ranked inside the top 20 in par four performance and inside the top 30 in birdie average, both are important statistics this week, therefore I expect him to go well around this course.

Shawn Stefani – I seem to back Shawn Stefani every week, and I believe he’ll win soon therefore I’m happy to keep backing him. Shawn has finished inside the top 25 on nine occasions this season and that includes a second place finish, a good week with the putter and we’ll inevitably see Stefani win soon. He’s a long driver of the ball and makes the birdies required to win this event, he is ranked 13th in the birdie average statistic which is advantageous. Stefani also ranks inside the top 25 in the par four performance statistic which should prove to be beneficial at the end of the week.
