    Frys.com Open Preview – 15th October

The 2014/15 PGA Tour season may have just finished, but the 2015/16 season gets underway on Thursday with the Frys.com Open. This event has been on the schedule since 2007 and it tends to be a great tournament from a betting perspective. A surprisingly strong field has assembled itself for this event, the likes of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka are all in action and are bound to bring in big crowds this week.

    Past Winners and Winning Scores
    2014 – Sang-Moon Bae -15
    2013 – Jimmy Walker -17
    2012 – Jonas Blixt -16
    2011 – Bryce Molder -17
    2010 – Rocco Mediate -15

The Course – Silverado Country Club (North)
    Par 72
    Course Yardage 7,203
As it did last year, the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa located in Napa Valley California hosts the opening event of the 2015/16 season. The course is a par 72 that’ll play 7,203 yards which isn’t particularly long. Despite this, the longer drivers of the ball appeared to have the advantage around this venue, the likes of Steven Bowditch, Martin Laird and Brooks Koepka all featured amongst the top 10. The only other statistic that stood out last year was par three performance and that’s because each of the par 3’s were pretty difficult.

    My Selections
Tony Finau – Last season was Tony Finau’s first on the PGA Tour and I think there was enough evidence to suggest that he’s ready to win at this level. Tony recorded an impressive five top 10 finishes throughout the whole of last season and just needs a good week with the putter and he’ll undoubtedly get his first victory at this level. He hits the ball miles which is advantageous this week, and he finished 12th around this track last year, this indicating it’s a venue he can win around.

Brendan Steele – I’m a big fan of Brendan Steele, I think he’ll win multiple times in the next few years. The American hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2011 but over the past couple of years he’s proved he’s more than capable of winning again. Last season, Steele finished inside the top 25 on eleven occasions and this includes a 2nd place finish and three other top 10’s. Finally, this is a good course for Steele, he’s a long driver of the ball and finished 21st around this track in 2014.

Jonas Blixt – 2012 winner of this event (albeit around a different course), Jonas Blixt finished the 2014/15 season really well. The Swede finished inside the top 30 in four of his last five starts on the PGA Tour, and in this period of time he was in contention on a couple of occasions. Blixt is a proven winner at this level, he’s recorded two wins on the PGA Tour and a third victory after a strong finish to the season wouldn’t be a surprise. Admittedly he missed the cut in this event last year, however the course should suit his game in my opinion. He’s a great scrambler and isn’t the most accurate of drivers, but driving accuracy isn’t important around this venue in my opinion.
