BMW Championship Preview – Thursday 17th September
The third of four FedEx Cup Playoff events gets underway on Thursday this week in a reduced field event. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will be taking part in the BMW Championship and as you’d expect, the field is a world class one. Jason Day is the bookmakers favourite and is followed in the betting by Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and the inform Henrik Stenson.

The Course – Conway Farms Golf Club
Course Yardage 7,251
The BMW Championship returns to the 2013 host venue, Conway Farms Golf Club this year. It was established in 1991 and is located in Lake Forest, Illinois. The course is a par 71 that plays 7,251 yards and Zach Johnson shot 16 under par to win around this venue in 2013. Interestingly, the course has a linksy feel to it and the wind is its main defence, therefore it might be worth looking at those who have previously performed well in the Open Championship. From a quick glance at the 2013 leaderboard you can tell that accuracy off the tee is important and I expect that to be the case again this week. Zach Johnson said bad shots will be penalised and there’s certainly a premium on accuracy this week, and for this reason I’ll be siding with accurate drivers of the ball.
Jim Furyk – Jim Furyk maybe ageing but he’s still playing some exceptional golf. He’s won one this year and is in great form coming into this week’s BMW Championship. The American has recorded three top 5’s in his last five stats, and one of those came in last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship where Jim finished in 4th position. Conway Farms Golf Club is a course that suits Furyk’s game, he finished 3rd around this venue in 2013 and he’s arguably the straightest driver of the ball in the field this week.

Matt Kuchar – Seven time winner on the PGA Tour, Matt Kuchar is a fantastic bet at 35/1 this week. The American has been playing some great golf in recent weeks, he tied for 7th in the PGA Championship and finished in 9th position in last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, this indicating his games in good shape. Similarly to Furyk, Conway Farms is a course that suits Kuchar’s game, he’s an accurate driver of the ball and excels in windy conditions, and I simply have to back him at 35/1.

Brian Harman – My final selection of the week is a big priced one in the form of Brian Harman. He won for the first time on the PGA Tour last year and he’s come close on a couple of occasions this season. In the past couple of week’s Harman has showed signs of form which is crucial, he tied for 30th in the Barclays and finished 12th in his most recent outing in the Deutsche Bank Championship. Like my other selections, Harman is an accurate driver of the ball which I believe to be crucial this week.
