    Wells Fargo Championship Betting Preview

This week’s PGA Tour event the Wells Fargo Championship takes place in North Carolina as some great players tee it up on Thursday. This week’s favourite is unsurprisingly Rory McIlroy who can be backed at a very short price of 4/1. The likes of Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson are also in the field and just behind Rory in the betting.

    2013 – Derek Ernst -8
    2012 – Rickie Fowler -14
    2011 – Lucas Glover -15
    2010 – Rory McIlroy -15

The Course – Quail Hollow Golf Club
    Par 72
    Course Yardage 7,442
Quail Hollow Golf Club was designed by George Cobb back in 1961 and in 1986 Arnold Palmer made a number of changes to several different holes. Since then Tom Fazio has redesigned the course on two occasions in 1997 and 2003. It should be noted that Quail Hollow will host the 2017 PGA Championship and the 2021 President Cup. Finally Quail Hollow has hosted the Wells Fargo Championship since 2003 therefore we know what it takes to win around this testing track.
Quail Hollow is a par 72 that plays a relatively lengthy 7,442 yards. It’s famous for the final three challenger holes which are known as “The Green Mile”. Unsurprisingly it suits the longer drivers of the ball. Each of the last eight winners of the Wells Fargo Championship have finished the year ranked inside the top 63 in the driving distance statistic. Driving distance is the only statistic which stands out to me this week therefore it’ll be one that I focus on.

    My Selections

Patrick Reed – This week’s short(ish) price selection comes in the form of Patrick Reed. The talented American is already a four time winner on the PGA Tour and he comes into this week in relatively good form. He finished 24th last week around a course which didn’t really suit his game and he made an impressive 17 birdies.
Reed tied for 32nd position in this event in 2012 & 2013. These are pretty decent results considering he is a much better player two years on. Finally I think it is worth noting that 40/1 is a superb price as he has won four times in less than 70 starts.

Jason Kokrak – Jason Kokrak is my best value bet of the week at an outstanding price of 100/1. Kokrak missed the cut last week around a course which didn’t suit his game, despite this he made eight birdies in his opening two rounds. Before last week’s event his form was very good, he’d recorded four top 20 finishes in five starts and he’s now ready to win on the PGA Tour in my opinion.
Last year Kokrak finished in 23rd position around Quail Hollow, thus suggesting that he can perform well in this event. He has the distance to compete off the tee, this year he’s ranked 11th in the driving distance statistic on the PGA Tour.

Rory Sabbatini – Six time PGA Tour winner Rory Sabbatini finished 6th last week in The Players Championship and I’m backing him to continue his form. He’s recorded three top ten finishes this season and I’m slightly surprised that I can back him at triple figures.
Sabbatini’s course form is inconsistent but impressive. He has finished inside the top ten on three occasions and that includes an 8th place finish last year. These results show he is capable of winning around this track and hopefully he’ll give us a run for our money this year.
