US Open Preview and Betting Tips
The second major championship of the year gets underway on Thursday, the US Open. And as you may expect the field is a world class one with all of the big names teeing it up in Washington. The world number one, Rory McIlroy is the bookies favourite at 7/1 and last year’s US Open Champion, Martin Kaymer can be backed at 50/1. American’s Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are also in the field and it’ll be interesting to see how both players fare around a demanding golf course.
2014 – Martin Kaymer -9
2013 – Justin Rose +1
2012 – Webb Simpson +1
2011 – Rory McIlroy -16
2010 – Graeme McDowell E
The Course – Chambers Bay
This year’s US Open host is Chambers Bay which was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr and opened for play eight years ago. It is a British links-style course therefore, I’ve backed players who can perform well in windy conditions and have looked closely at the Open Championship form. Chambers Bay can reportedly play up to 7,800 yards and the fairways are wide therefore length off the tee is a huge advantage. Finally, Mike Davis (The head of the USGA) has said that “some of the greens have a lot of undulations”, this suggests that scrambling will be crucial.
Rickie Fowler – My opening selection for this weeks, US Open is Rickie Fowler. The talented American had a slow start to the season but, Rickie won the Players Championship last month, this suggesting that his game is in excellent shape. Above I’ve mentioned that driving distance is advantageous and Fowler is one of the bigger hitters on the PGA Tour and Chambers Bay should suit his game. Fowler has an excellent record in the Open Championship, he finished second last year and has recorded two other top 15 finishes, and this indicates he can play links courses well.

Henrik Stenson – My favourite selection this week is Henrik Stenson, he’s been in excellent form this season and it is only a matter of time before he wins in my opinion. Like all of my selections, Stenson has the power off the tee required around Chambers Bay but he also has accuracy with his 3 wood when required. The ability to play well in windy conditions is crucial and Stenson has performed well in the Open Championship in the past. The Swede has finished inside the top three in the Open three times.

Paul Casey – Englishman, Paul Casey is my final selection for this week’s major Championship. He’s currently experiencing his best season for some time, Paul has already recorded five top ten finishes this year on the PGA Tour. This includes a 6th place finish in the Masters and a tie for 5th in the WGC Matchplay. Paul Casey is ranked 45th in the driving distance statistic this year and distance is advantageous around Chambers Bay. Finally, Casey has the ability to perform well around links courses, he’s finished inside the top ten in the Open Championship twice.
