On the PGA Tour this week we visit TPC Southwind for the St. Jude Classic, it is the penultimate event before the 2nd major of the year, the US Open. As expected the field is a relatively weak one although the likes of Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson are playing this week in preparation for the tough test they will inevitably face at Pinehurst.
Last year Harris English beat Phil Mickelson by two shots to win the first PGA Tour title of his career. In 2012 Dustin Johnson won this event with Harrison Frazar and Lee Westwood winning here in 2011 and 2010.
TPC Southwind is one of the tougher courses on the PGA Tour and was ranked 10th in terms of difficulty in 2012 which is why it can be good preparation for the US Open. It is a par 70 that plays 7244 yards, driving accuracy is regarded as an important trait although the recent winners suggest otherwise.
Harris English –Defending champion Harris English looks slightly long odds at 33/1. English played very well here last year and beat Phil Mickelson by two shots to win the title. I expect English to be at the top of his game with the US Open next week and his game was not far off last time out at the Crowne Plaza Invitational where he finished in 30th position. He played very well hitting 75% of greens in regulation which suggests he is striking the ball well. English has a great chance of defending his title if he can get the putter going this week.

Charley Hoffman –Hoffman is a player that has been knocking on the door all year but can’t quite get that win. He has played in 13 events this year missing just one cut, in that period he has three top 10 finishes as well as finishing in 11th-20th on three occasions. Last week Hoffman did finish in 19th position which does suggest he is playing well. Hoffman is very good from tee to green hitting 68.91% of greens in regulation this year. Par 4 performance is also key this week and Hoffman is ranked 17th on the PGA Tour in terms of par four performance this year.

David Hearn –The Canadian David Hearn is looking for the first PGA Tour win of his career and his recent form suggests he may not be too far away from his first victory. Hearn has made the cut in each of his last five events and has finished in 28th, 21st and 6th in his last three competitions. Hearn has played here on three occasions with his best finish coming last year when he finished 18th which suggests he can play well around TPC Southwind. Accuracy tends to be important and Hearn is ranked 28th on the PGA Tour this year in terms of driving accuracy. If Hearn can continue playing well he will have every chance this week.

Robert Streb – After a shaky first season on the PGA Tour Robert Streb appears to be finding his feet. The American has already doubled the amount of money he won last year in just ten events so far this season. Streb has come close on one occasion finishing 2nd in the Zurich Classic, he also played very well last week before a final round of 76.Streb is ranked 3rd in terms of par four performance on the PGA tour which is set to be an important trait this week. Last week the American was ranked 13th in terms of greens in regulations hit which shows he is playing well from tee to green.
