Alfred Dunhill Championship Preview – Thursday 26th November 2015
The European Tour’s 2014/15 season may have come to an end last week, but the 2015/16 season gets underway in South Africa on Thursday. The field isn’t a particularly strong one but South African’s, Louis Oosthuizen, Brendan Grace and Charl Schwartzel are all participating. Unsurprisingly, all three of these players are amongst the favourites, however I’m keen to oppose all three at short prices.
Past Winners and Winning Scores
2014 – Brendan Grace – 20
2013 – Charl Schwartzel -17
2012 – Charl Schwartzel -24
2011 – Garth Mulroy -19
2010 – Pablo Martin Benavides -11
The Course – Leopard Creek Golf Club
Course Yardage 7,287
Opened in 1996, Leopard Creek Golf Club hosts the Alfred Dunhill Championship for a 12th consecutive year this week. Low scoring is crucial this week as you can tell from the recent winning scores, Charl Schwartzel notably shot -24 in 2012. A good week off the tee in imperative, looking at the recent winners, they are all very good drivers of the ball on their day. Distance is slightly more important than accuracy and at 7,287 yards, it’s no surprise to see the longer drivers of the ball prosper around this track.
Trevor Fisher Jnr – Trevor Fisher Jnr won the African Open at the very start of the year, and he demonstrated that he’s more than capable of shooting the low scores likely to be required this week. Admittedly, Fisher wasn’t excellent throughout the 2015 European Tour season but he showed that he can compete at this level, he tied for 3rd in the Portugal Masters just last month. Being back in South Africa should certainly bring the best out of the South African, and he’s a big hitter therefore the course suits. Finally, Trevor Fisher Jnr finished 4th in this event last year around the same track, which indicates he’s an excellent bet this week.

Scott Jamieson – Scott Jamieson showed signs of returning to form at the end of the season and he’s already won once in South Africa and I’m keen to have him on side this week. Similarly to Trevor Fisher Jnr, Jamieson is a very big hitter of the ball and that is the main trait I’ll be looking at around Leopard Creek Golf Club. Unsurprisingly, the Scotsman finished 3rd around this track in 2012 which indicates it is a golf course which will suit his game and therefore I’m happy to back him at the prices being quoted.

Pelle Edberg – At the age of 36, Pelle Edberg had one of his best seasons on the European Tour. The Swede recorded four top 10 finishes throughout the 2014/15 season and he notably finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in strong fields and in a relatively weak field this week, he’s more than capable of winning. Edberg is a long driver of the ball which as I’ve mentioned above is advantageous and he actually recorded four top 25 finishes in four consecutive years from 2006 to 2009.
